Did you ever have something that just didn’t go right? You said something to someone that you wished that you could take back. You built something that was out of specification. You tried to fix something but you made it worse.
We all have those times when the bull gets you by the horns and things just don’t go as planned. When that happens, there are things that you can do to minimize stress and minimize the problem.
1. Own it.
If something didn’t go right and you were responsible, take ownership of it. Nothing is worse than hearing someone blame someone else or make excuses. No one is perfect. Things happen.
2. Resolve it.
Determine how to fix the problem.
3. Don’t wait.
Never let a bad situation linger. The longer you wait, the worse it will get. Resolve to get it out of the way and move on.
4. Learn from it.
What can you do differently in the future to avoid repeating the same problem? We can profit from mistakes only if we learn from them. If we do not learn from them, then we just cheated ourselves.
The world’s best managers have problems just like any of us. However, because they follow these steps when there is a problem, they can move forward more quickly.
You’re human. So forgive yourself and then get working.
